The Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary It is located in the Nainital & Champawat districts of Uttarakhand state and has been named after the Nandhaur River It lies in the Tarai Arc landscape flanked by river Gola in the west and river Sharda in the east and intersected by river Nandhaurin the middle of the sanctuary. Nandhaur Sanctuary
Nandhaur Sanctuary encompasses a significant part of Haldwani Forest Division the Nandhaur, Jaulasal, Danda, Sharda forest ranges and sanctuary buffer. It came into existence on 14 December 2012. The river Nandhaur, Kaloriya and Kaloniya split the Nandhaur Sanctuary in to three parts the lifeline of the Nandhaur Sanctuary. The spectacular landscape represents a very unique siwalikbhabhar region having riverine ecosystem with valleys bound by hills.
Nandhaur Wild Life Sanctuary,, today holds the large population of the Tiger in the area. The region is thus one of the last remaining strongholds which support a potentially viable population of this majestic and critically endangered felid. It along with theNandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary National Park also represents the North-Western most limits of Tiger distribution in the Indian subcontinent.
The most apparent feature that sets Nandhaur apart from other sites in the shivalikbhabar region is that the Nandhaur region is predominantly mountainous and is characterized by narrower valleys bound by hill slopes which are much steeper in Nandhaur.
The 269 sq km of Nandhaur Wild life sanctuary plays a vital role in the maintenance of the soil and water regime of region. As part of the catchment of the Nandhaur and Kalaunia river, it augments ground water resources and prevents excessive flooding and erosion of valuable top soil. The most notable area erstwhile famous as ‘Jaulasal Gond Sanctuary’ requires special attention for protecting the rich floral and faunal biodiversity it harbors.
Based on the physiognomy and floristic composition, the permanent vegetation of the sanctuary covers northern tropical moist deciduous forest significantly and includes Sal forest, Mixed forest, Riverine forest, Scrub forest, Savannah grassland and Subtropical pine forest. The notable species of the region are Dysoxylumbinectariferum (Okhalkat) near Pilapani, Pittosporum floribudum (Churi) at Danda and Endopeptidinaoudhensis (Hatipawa) near Boom FRH as the greatest attractants for the plant lovers.
It is situated in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. It is part of the larger Nandhaur Wildlife SanctuaryTiger Reserve which was first to come under the Project Tiger initiative launched in 1973.
